Med SLP Coaching: What school never taught you

School provides us with a wonderful service. We all sat attentively in organized rows absorbing the resourceful information being delivered to us from the front of the room. From elementary school to college, we’ve learned the biological makeup of the human body, the intricate structure of language, and how to calculate complex formulas. In graduate school, it gets even better because you are (theoretically) learning the content that directly relates to where you want to take your career. But what most schools don’t teach you is how to succeed as a med SLP. A very specialized area of a specialized field.

Thinking outside the classroom

You may have learned how to create goals for your patients, but what about for yourself and your career? Maybe you learned how to conduct patient interviews, but did you learn how to go on a job interview? You learned about communication disorders, but did you learn how to communicate effectively with colleagues and administrators? You probably learned a ton of halfway useful clinical information, but did you learn how to be a life-long learner and utilize the clinical resources around you? You learned how to stay up all night and cram for your test in order to ace it, but did you learn how to work efficiently and effectively so you can get everything you need to get done in the tight squeeze of a chaotic day in healthcare? You probably learned how to make specific diagnoses and create treatment plans for textbook cases, but what about for those complex patients where there doesn’t seem to be one right answer (or any answer at all)?

Stuck at a dead end

When we applied to graduate school, none of us thought we’d spend our careers in a mediocre, unfulfilling job. We didn’t realize that the temporary job we were only using as a stepping stone would start looking like a long term option. Life is about growth. Growth with exciting turns and life-changing opportunities to make our place in the world and have the greatest impact on the patients we serve. If this resonates with you, then stay tuned for the next few weeks because each week I’ll be posting a new topic that goes outside of the typical speech pathology banter. From strategies to create goals for your dream job to tips for thriving within them, you’ll get a foundation of information that will help you continue to grow into a future that you can build for yourself. It’s a course I sure wish was on my class syllabus as a student. And maybe you do too. But as a life-long learner, the world around us becomes a constant classroom and the syllabus extends to the very end of our careers. So with that… class is officially back in session.
